Belt Rankings

The objective of karate is to develop good character, not to achieve high rank. Rank is not intended to be an exact measurement of skill.

With each advance in rank comes a greater level of responsibility and the expectation of more intensive training. New techniques will be practiced and techniques already learned must be demonstrated with increased skill.

New students hold the rank of 10th Kyu and wear a white belt

10 Kyu	White	1 week after receiving a uniform
9 Kyu	Yellow	3 months after 10^th Kyu
8 Kyu	Orange	3 months after 9^th Kyu
7 Kyu	Orange Stripe	3 months after 8^th Kyu
6 Kyu	Green	3 months after 7^th Kyu
5 Kyu	Purple	3 months after 6^th Kyu
4 Kyu	Purple Stripe	3 months after 5^th Kyu
3 Kyu	Brown	3 months after 4^th Kyu
2 Kyu	Brown Stripe	3 months after 3^rd Kyu
1 Kyu	Brown 2 Stripe	6 months after 2^nd Kyu
Shodan	Black	1 year after 1^st Kyu
Nidan	Black	2 years after shodan
Sandan	Black	3 years after nidan
Yondan	Black	4 years after sandan
Godan	Black	5 years after yondan
Rokudan	Black	6 years after godan
Nanadan	Black	7 years after rokudan
Hachidan	Black	8 years after nanadan

Kyudan is awarded to the chief instructor and Judan is usually a posthumous rank.

The minimum time requirement noted above is calculated for students who attend all of the instructed classes (two or three times a week, depending on rank). For those who cannot train as frequently, the time needed to prepare for the next exam will be greater.
